How to Make Your Apartment More Homey - Part 4

Welcome to part 4 of my mini series "How to Make Your Apartment More Homey". Today we will be focusing one of the most challenging things apartment dwellers come up against. Walls.

Today's topic - No Paint, No Nails!
The white wall epidemic is a hard one to beat unless you have a very specific decorating style. And many times we wish we could paint just because the walls are so bad. Really, apartment walls are the worst. Think of all the abuse those poor walls have gone through. Every personality, age, and gender has probably made an impression on those walls, and I'm not just talking about a mental impression either. You can only fix holes so many times. We look at nail pops, sheetrock seams and opposing textures. A bold paint color could fix a lot! But for the thousands of people who can't paint that bold color or any color at all here are a few tips on how to get past the white wall epidemic.

First you have to start with 100% your flavor, style and likes. You will never love your space if it's not you. Do you like calm colors? Make the white wall work for you; try a monochromatic look. Do you love color? Then spread it like spray paint and no one will even think about your walls.

Sometimes the hardest thing about not painting is the fact that we count on wall color being a focal point. To counteract that problem you need to find a new focal point. Spread the desired color into your drapes, couch cushions, rugs, etc... If you are feeling really bold make a bright couch, chair, or bedspread the focal point that carries the primary color. Don't be afraid to have one amazing piece. The problem comes when you try to make to many Wow pieces or too many matching wow pieces.
My favorite color is brown (boring I know) and so most of my home is neutral and brown. But to make up for it I hung cinnamon (burnt orange) curtains to make a statement and beautiful focal point.

Let's talk about nails. Thankfully this not as big of a problem as no paint. Most apartments will allow at least a few nails. But for those of you who can't hang anything or with only very small nails here are a few options.

1) Large framed artwork, just frames, or large mirrors propped up from the floor or furniture.

2) sticky velcro, sticky tack (or is it ticky tack?) or those 3M sticky wall hooks.
These curtains are just panels of material sewn onto sticky velcro and then stuck to the bifold door. Simple but makes a great statement. You see how little room I had to add color to this side of the room. It's full of brown doors. Something had to be done!

3) Depending on what kind of ceiling you have, you might get away with hanging things from the ceiling. Popcorn ceilings can hide a multitude of sins...and nail holes. Consider hanging a picture from the ceiling, sprucing it up with ribbon or making an industrial look with wire.

  1. I was really looking forward to this post because I had no ideas on what to do in a place where I can't use nails! These are some great ideas, thanks!!

    1. One more thing I didn't think to add to the post... decals. (Removable stickers on the wall). I have a couple in my apartment. Butterflies in Emma's room. and a tree in my bedroom.

How to Make Your Apartment More Homey - Part 5

Welcome to part 5 of my mini series "How to Make Your Apartment More Homey". Once you get a grasp on the first four topics you've really got something going for you. These last two steps are definitely not the meat of the problem.  Today we will focus on - The Color Palette. A little bit of color theory wouldn't hurt anyone. I realize that we are alway feeling the need to try something new and be a little different. It's called fashion, and that's okay. Be different! Make a statement! It's good to try something new. But if it's ugly just say so, don't lie to save your pride. Your pride has already been painted all over that new yellow couch!  You can google a basic color wheel and the different ways to pair the colors or most people have an eye for what looks good together. It's usually a good thing to stick with the same hue (bold with bold, or pastels with pastels, and burnt colors with burnt colors) but even that isn't alwa...

42 Questions To Ask Your Spouse On Valentine's Day

If you and your spouse were on the Newlywed game show... would you win? My husband and I are going to a couple's retreat next month and decided to get a head start on it by brushing up on our newlywed gameshow questions. We actually did pretty well the first time through, but we keep giving each other pop quizzes to keep the answers fresh in our minds. Below I've made a list of common couples questions that you and your spouse might find fun to ask each other. 1) What is your spouse's all time favorite movie? 2) What would your spouse request as their "last meal"? 3) What is your spouse's favorite pastime? 4) What percentage of housework would your husband say he does? 5) What flavor of cake did you have at your wedding? 6) What is your spouse's ideal date night? 7) Excluding people, what would your spouse say is their most prized possession? 8) At what specific sport or game will you wife say she is better than you? 9) What is your spouse...

Spring Cleaning Challenge Day 6 Psalm 51:10

Welcome to your first day of rest. Tomorrow is Sunday, a day that should be put aside to worship the Lord and to rest your body from physical activity. Each Sunday we will meditate on a verse that reflects having a clean heart. Because we all know that a spotless house doesn't make us truly happy. Only a clean heart can keep a smile on our faces. Psalm 51:10  Create in me a clean heart, O God,  and renew a right spirit within me.  What does a clean heart look like? Who judges wether the heart is clean or not? Who cares about your heart more than anyone else? Just like we have been pulling out our furniture this week looking for dust bunnies, take a moment to pull out the furniture in your life and look for "Me" bunnies. Search out your heart for selfish things you've tucked away, whether it be a secret, a personal pleasure, a blatant sin, or an old heartache.  When you've found them, take them all one by one and lay them out in a straight row in front of...
