How to Make Your Apartment More Homey - Part 1

Welcome to part 1 of a mini series on "How to Make Your Apartment More Homey". If you have a house, don't ex out of this post, there are tips here for anyone living anywhere. Sure it's geared toward those of us who can't paint or put nails in the walls, but sometimes you need a little bit of unconventional artistry in your home (no matter what kind of home) to give it a fresh look.

Today we will be focusing on Buy Big - Buy Quality.
Your first thought is probably, "But I have a tiny apartment!" I'm glad you mentioned that. It doesn't matter what size apartment or home you have to use this trick. Yes you have to buy furniture that proportionately fits your home, but you don't have to buy knick-knack furniture just because your space is small.

1) Buy the biggest piece of furniture that looks right for your space.
When we think rich, large house, lots of money, etc.. we think BIG. So in order to give your apartment a sophisticated homey look, buy an item that looks big. It doesn't really have to be big, it could just be the way it's built. Don't buy a futon for your living room, buy a couch. Don't sleep on an air mattress or a simple mattress and bed frame, get a full bed and head board.

When you decorate, don't fill your space with knick-knacks because you think that's the only thing that will fit or look right. Buy one large piece of art instead of several smaller items. Get one stream line coffee table instead of several smaller end tables. Get the point? Act like it's a home, decorate it likes it a home, just make sure you scale it like an apartment.

Have you ever walked down the kids isle and seen all of those adorable miniature pieces of furniture for a dollhouse? They are beautiful! If they were life size, they would create a millionaires home, right? Well, guess what? They sell apartment sized items, that are a small scale of version of regular home living.
Here is my apartment sized couch.  It has everything a normal couch would (it even has a lounge on the one end!) and it fits great in my apartment!
In my bedroom I put a bed with a headboard and footboard, as well as two nightstands. I had to use the window as a wall (bedrooms are for sleeping anyway) but I made it work. If you look at this and think, wow! what kind of apartment do you have? That would never fit in mine! Then be creative. Get a bed with only a head board (that's what makes the biggest statement.) and maybe use only one night stand or be creative and find something useful but smaller.

2) Buy the Best You Can Buy and You'll Only Cry Once.
Quality makes everything look better. If you can't afford it new, think about buying something old or used and repainting it. A coat of paint and new handles can go a long way. This point really stands on it's own, so I won't ramble on about nothing. I think you get the point.

So to summarize buy proportionately the nicest, largest items you can and then accessorize minimally. Less is more when it comes to accessories. Which is what we will be discussing in part 2 tomorrow. An Apartment can only hold so much stuff, and decorations don't keep food on the table. So decorate less, and party more!

Till Tomorrow,
Sarah

42 Questions To Ask Your Spouse On Valentine's Day

If you and your spouse were on the Newlywed game show... would you win? My husband and I are going to a couple's retreat next month and decided to get a head start on it by brushing up on our newlywed gameshow questions. We actually did pretty well the first time through, but we keep giving each other pop quizzes to keep the answers fresh in our minds. Below I've made a list of common couples questions that you and your spouse might find fun to ask each other. 1) What is your spouse's all time favorite movie? 2) What would your spouse request as their "last meal"? 3) What is your spouse's favorite pastime? 4) What percentage of housework would your husband say he does? 5) What flavor of cake did you have at your wedding? 6) What is your spouse's ideal date night? 7) Excluding people, what would your spouse say is their most prized possession? 8) At what specific sport or game will you wife say she is better than you? 9) What is your spouse&#

DIY Window Cleaner

Day two of our prep work for the Spring Cleaning Challenge! Today I'm going to give you a recipe for window cleaner.  I've also been told that using warm water and a little bit of cornstarch is a great way to clean your windows as well. I don't have a recipe or a ratio for you though. I hope you are gearing up for the Challenge, it's only 7 days away! Don't forget to leave a comment below if you want to join us for the Spring Cleaning Challenge. Sarah

Spring Cleaning Challenge- Day 21, Shower

I hope you had a wonderful weekend, celebrating Easter with family and friends. This week we will be focusing on the bathrooms. (I hope you don't have very many) Because I'm not getting this post out till late morning you might consider swapping today's task and tomorrow's. If you get up early and have already taken a shower you might not want to clean the shower today. Instead you can jump ahead to tomorrow and clean the shower curtain and liner. Then tomorrow morning when you take a shower you can clean it. Do whatever works best with your schedule. CHALLENGE: Clean you shower(s) till it sparkles. Here is a link back to the post about shower cleaner. It really does work the best; It makes my shower tiles sparkle! I find that taking a shower while cleaning it is the easiest way. If you have multiple showers, you might consider not getting soaking wet every time, or asking a spouse or child to help you. Take a scrub brush to work on grout mold, and a sponge to wipe
